Virtual Depictions :
San Francisco

AI Data Sculpture

Virtual Depictions is a massive generative AI Data Sculpture that Refik Anadol Studio created for the city of San Francisco – an unprecedented approach to public art that transforms the dynamic city into an art generating platform. It consists of a series of parametric data sculptures displayed on a 40’ x 80’ LED wall. Utilizing publicly available datasets that consist of transportation information, city management documents, museum archives and housing records, Virtual Depictions tells the story of the city and people living in it. In collaboration with Kilroy Realty Corporation / John Kilroy and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP Architects, we transformed the media wall located in 350 Mission’ lobby to frame urban experiences with a meticulously abstract, cinematic, and site-specific data narrative.
Location: San Francisco, United States
Date: September 30th, 2015 (Installation date of the permanent piece)

Archive Dreaming

Immersive Installation

Archive Dreaming is the world’s first AI-driven immersive room. Refik Anadol was selected as a resident artist for Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence program when he received a commission to work with SALT Research collections to create Archive Dreaming. Developed during this residency, Archive Dreaming transformed the gallery space on floor -1 at SALT Galata into an all-encompassing environment that challenged immutable concepts of the archive while destabilizing archive-related questions with machine learning algorithms. By training a neural network with images of 1,700,000 documents at SALT Research Center, Anadol reframed memory, history, and culture through the lens of machine intelligence.

Melting Memories

AI Data Sculpture

Melting Memories explored the materiality of remembering through the aesthetic interpretation of EEG data. By showcasing several research projects in collaboration with the Neuroscape Laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco, the project translated the elusive process of memory retrieval into data collections, and invited visitors to experience Anadol’s creative vision of “recollection.” Anadol gathered data on the neural mechanisms of cognitive control from an EEG (electroencephalogram) that measured changes in brain wave activity and provided evidence of how the brain functions over time. These data sets constituted the building blocks for the unique algorithms that the artist needed for the multi-dimensional visual structures on display.

WDCH Dreams

Data & AI Driven Public Installation

Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for its 100th Anniversary, WDCH Dreams was an immersive journey of both time and space utilizing machine learning algorithms trained on 100 years of LA Phil performances. In partnership with Google Arts and Culture and researcher Parag K. Mital, Anadol applied machine intelligence to the orchestra’s digital archives – nearly 45 terabytes of data – 587,763 image files, 1,880 video files, 1,483 metadata files, and 17,773 audio files. The files were parsed into millions of data points and categorized by hundreds of attributes by the deep neural networks with the capacity to both remember the totality of the LA Phil’s memories and create new connections between them. The result was a radical visualization of the organization’s first century and an exploration of synergies between art and technology, and architecture and institutional memory.

Infinite Space

Immersive Installation

One of the greatest eighteenth-century English artists William Blake famously said, “if the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is – infinite.” Infinite Space was a collection of works that revisited Blake’s statement, and sought to cleanse the doors of perception with the tools available to twenty-firstcentury artists. The exhibition explored memories and dreams through the mind of a machine by using data sets ranging from human memories, photographs of Mars, cultural archives, and sea surface activity as data sculptures and paintings.

Machine Hallucination : NYC

Immersive Installation

Machine Hallucinations is a 30-minute experimental cinema, presented in 16K resolution, that visualizes the story of New York through the city’s collective memories that constitute its deeply-hidden consciousness. The exhibition does not tell the story of today’s New York, but, instead, foresees what may come, through the machine intelligence’s bridging of the gap between the present and a vision of the near future. By deploying machine learning algorithms on one of the world’s largest datasets — over 100 million architectural images of New York — we created a cinematic data universe of the city’s collective memories and their AI reimaginings.Machine Hallucination offers a unique context for us to explore an alternative reality. As both an entertaining and enthralling experience, the machine’s hallucination can expand our capacity to dream, and help us envision things that we otherwise could not see or imagine.

Latent Being

Immersive Installation

Composed of four chapters, Latent Being in Berlin was an art installation that turned an architectural space into a temporary ecosystem. The city, the architecture and the visitors all became players in the performance. The audience found themselves walking through a dynamic ocean of Berlin-related digital visual and sonic memories, and light and fog sculptures – abstract representations of the machine’s neural networks. The machine learned about the elements that made up the building’s physical form, not just its structure, but also the life inside it; and visitors became physically connected to the artificial thinking process. The constant data input – representations of movement, social interactions and space – were transformed into a hallucinogenic large-scale LED screen painting.

DDP Seoul Haemong

Data & AI Driven Public Installation

Using Zaha Hadid’s iconic DDP Building in Seoul as a canvas, Refik Anadol Studio created a public art installation for the Seoul Haemong Light Festival in 2019. The performance harnessed a large Seoul-related dataset in the mind of a machine to unearth the materiality of the building’s structure and explore the architecture of memory itself. Upon unveiling DDP’s form, the building set the stage for the exploration of a new kind of topographic memory through light, revealing upon its face the city’s collective history in a fluid form. Since DDP’s “Seoul Light Festival,” Refik Anadol Studio has become a household name in South Korea, familiar not just to industry professionals but everyday citizens as well.

Machine Memoirs: Space

Audio / Video Performance

Machine Memoirs: Space marked Refik Anadol Studio’s most comprehensive solo exhibition in Istanbul, to date, and was free to the public. The exhibition investigated the relationships between data, memory, knowledge and history in cosmic dimensions. Inspired by the Studio’s recent collaboration with NASA JPL, and Anadol’s longterm research into the photographic history of space exploration, the artist used publicly available photographs of space taken by satellites and spacecraft deployed by NASA as the main building blocks for the works. The result was a machine-based visual speculation of humanity’s historical attempts to explore the depths of space, unveiling the intricate connections between obscurity and openness and creating an alternate data universe of abstract forms.

Sense of Space

AI Data Sculpture

Refik Anadol Studio’s exhibition at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale explored the various meanings of connectivity and structure in relation to living organisms’ invisible architectural forms. The Biennale’s main theme, “how will we live together,” inspired Anadol to share the Studio’s long-term collaborations with Dr. Taylor Kuhn, coordinator of the Human Connectome Project (HCP) at UCLA and Dr. Gökhan S. Hotamisligil, who has been researching the relationship between metabolic health and certain chronic diseases at Harvard University. The resulting art installations, Human Connectome and Molecular Architecture, and presented an interdisciplinary investigation of how human vitality and unobscured anatomical spaces can help us find new metaphors for adaptability in innovative design.

Serpentine Metamorphosis

Immersive Installation

Set in the iconic Piazza Duomo, this public artwork was the centerpiece of an epic journey that began in the Italian fashion capital. Displaying an extraordinary visual impact, Serpenti Metamorphosis was an immersion into the infinite forms of transformation that take place in the natural world. It came to life by training machine learning algorithms on more than 300 million images of nature, 75 million of which are real flowers, resulting in a dynamic three-dimensional AI data sculpture that transformed these natural phenomena into visual poetry. In this sense, metamorphosis was both the main inspiration of the project and its method: the machine learnt what a flower was – its colours, patterns and shapes, and then it could dream of flowers that existed only in its synthetic memories. To enhance the visual elements, the installation also includes the scent of “Rainforest Serpenti,” a newly released fragrance made in collaboration with fragrance and flavor company Firmenich.

Renaissance Dreams

Immersive Installation

Renaissance Dreams emerged from RAS’s groundbreaking experiments utilizing machine learning algorithms to turn visual and textual datasets of Renaissance painting, sculpture, architecture, and literature into multidimensional art pieces. As the machine re-imagines these historical works of powerful imagination, elevated craftsmanship, and distinguished acumen, the dynamic pieces change their immersive shapes and colors, representing unique walks through the machine’s latent data universe. Creating illustrative visual channels through which to review the entire Renaissance corpus, the piece displays an entirely new and poetic way of renewing our connection to living traces of art history.

Machine Hallucinations :
Nature Dreams

AI Data Sculpture

Machine Hallucinations: Nature Dreams, the most visited exhibition in Konig Galerie’s history, comprises four novel aesthetic approaches to a vast photographic dataset of nature: A giant LED screen displaying machine-generated, dynamic pigments of nature, a site-specific, real-time public art projection on the facade of the gallery’s unique building, four new series of data sculptures, and 3 square-box data paintings featuring landscapeand flower-themed GAN walks. An architectural exhibition of synesthetic reality experiments based on GAN algorithms developed by artificial intelligence and inspired by fluid dynamics, Nature Dreams turns these datasets into latent multisensory experiences to commemorate the beauty of the earth we share.

Unsupervised MoMA

AI Data Paintings

What would a machine mind dream of after “seeing” the vast collection of The Museum of Modern Art? Unsupervised harnessed 138,151 images from MoMA’s digitized archives through StyleGAN2, an algorithm developed by NVIDIA researchers with adaptive discriminator augmentation (ADA). Anadol then explored a latent space with a custom software called a Latent Space Browser, which Refik Anadol Studio has been developing since 2017. Spanning more than 200 years of art, from paintings to photography to cars to video games, the MoMA collection is an extraordinary dataset—within which works from artistic movements such as Surrealism, not unlike the works in Unsupervised, explored automatism, chance, and systems to generate unprecedented new art forms.

Machine Hallucinations : Coral Dreams

AI Data Sculpture

For Machine Hallucinations: Coral, a site-specific data sculpture designed for a specific location in Miami Beach, Anadol and his team collected 1,742,772 images of coral from publicly available social med AI platforms and processed them with machine learning classification models. As the machine-mind began to make its own connections between data points and “hallucinated” about alternative coral shapes and colors, the data universe expanded into a latent cosmos in which fluid dynamics became the main inspiration of Anadol’s artistic creativity. Connecting a digital ecosystem of data and a landscape that is home to many living ecosystems, the artwork focused on preservation and sustainability as part of Art Basel Miami 2021, in collaboration with Aorist Art and Faena Hotel Miami Beach.
